The k: drive

The k: disk drive that is shared across the network at North Central. You should have a folder at:

• Tuesday class... k:/04FA/IFS_104_2_04FA
• Thursday class... k:/04FA/IFS_104_3_04FA

You should notice two folders here:

1. common_area - this is where I will place files available to the whole class, you can only read or copy files in this folder, not write
2. your folder with initials and last name, where you will put your lab and homework assignments

Before we start in earnest, please do a couple things for me:

• Please rename your folder <lastname>_<firstname>. For example, my folder name would be:

krieger_william

• Create sub-folders in your folder for lab and homework assignments called:

lab

homework

The k: drive is not (unfortunately) available over the internet. You must come into campus to access it.

The "Common Area"

The "Common Area" on the k: drive is a location where I can place files that may be useful during lecture, homework, or lab. The "Common Area" is located at:

• Tuesday class... k:/04FA/IFS_104_2_04FA/common_area/
• Thursday class... k:/04FA/IFS_104_3_04FA/common_area/

Files from the data disk referenced in our text are available in the data_disk folder in the Common Area. 

To start, you can open the file in Excel, then re-save it to your lab folder using the File/Save As menu.

Homework

Please place your name in a cell toward the bottom of each worksheet.

Your homework spreadsheets must be of presentation quality. That includes:

• Titles should stand out: bold, larger font, color, centered
• Row/column headings should stand out... not quite as much as titles
• No spelling errors
• Correct data entry

All homework must be placed in the homework folder in your k: drive. You must place your homework in a file/folder that I can easily find. You can either:

• Create a sub-folder for each homework (hw1-hw6)
• Name your workbook files according to the example in the homework. For example, store the Kylie's Pet Shop example on page 1.63 in a file named kylies_pet_shop.xls

Don't do anything (Open using Excel, Cut/Paste, etc) to your homework files after the due date. This will change the "modified" date of your file and make your homework "late".

If you happen to use an older version of Excel at home and can't do something I've asked, then usually I'll accept it. Please note somewhere on your spreadsheet the problem you encountered. Of course, if what your missing is the point of the exercise, then you should complete your homework in the lab.
