Counters, Guest books, Blogs, etc.

Server-side components

Adding larger components to your web site just requires a little research and a little more time and energy.

Counters, guest books, blogs are all web page components that run on your or someone else's server. These server-side components can usually be done in two fundamental ways:

  1. You download software to support the component on your (or your ISP's) server.
  2. You use a third party's web site to manage the whole process.

The tradeoff between these two options is typically easy learning curave and use (option #1) versus having total control of your site (option #2).

Counters

Web page counters track how many visitors your page has attracted.

Initially, most counters were implemented as CGI programs... and many still are. The ISP hosting your site may provide commonly-used counter CGI scripts.

The use of third-party counters is now very popular, and there are many sites that provide them.

Guest books

Guest books are web utilities that allow people to leave comments on your web site.

Like counters, this functionality may very well be provided by your ISP. Also, there are as many guest book sites as there are colors in the rainbow.

I have not seen one particular guest book site or script gain wide acceptance.

Blogs

Blog is short for "web log"... which is a sort of online diary or stream-of-consciousness log. People who write blogs are called bloggers. This kind of expression, regardless of its intrinsic value, is very well suited to the web.

Blogs can be general rants, or more focused on a particular topic.

A very popular site for this utility is www.blogger.com Many more sites for the having with a google search.

It seems more common for blogs to be hosted at a third-party site, rather than run on your own server.
