Graphics Guidelines

Graphics guidelines are concerned with the visual presentation of your site.

In (some) order of importance:

Avoid long download times Rule of thumb: keep your images between 30KB-50 KB

Avoid using the browser to resize images Image size is not reduced if you use the browser for resizing images

Image editors may do a better job resizing your image as well

Provide "alt" text for images It's a nice backup in case something happens to your image

Also some browsers support surfing without pictures

Label photos If the meaning of a photo is unclear, then label it... especially if it a hyperlink

Avoid too much animation You don't want your page to be too busy

Depending on your site, the user may not want or expect any animation at all

Avoid animating logos Or you name... present your most essential information clearly and simply

Helps when printing also

Avoid exotic font choices Some users will not have exotic fonts or sizes

Make your page fit The standard or average computer display is currently 800x600 pixels

Your page greatly should not exceed this, especially the width

Readable text Text should be readable in front of images or backgrounds
