Naperville Invitational
Basketball League
Introduction
Hola! Welcome to the first season of the Naperville
Invitational Basketball League, or NIBL. This 2 page introduction
is the easiest way to understand what you're getting into. The
other information included in this package is:
- Bylaws - the official, detailed rules of the NIBL
(yawn)
- Player List - list of NBA players eligible to be
drafted
- NBA Schedule - complete 1997-1998 NBA schedule
- 1997 NBA Stats - player rankings based on last
year's stats to help you when selecting players. The list
is incomplete, but I have tried to include most NBA
starters.
Most of all, don't forget the NIBL draft! Call
if you need directions. When: Nov 22, 1997, Saturday
morning 10:00 a.m. at Bill Krieger's house Where: 1016
Kauai King Ct in beautiful Naperville, IL Phone:

A New League
- Our goal is to create a fantasy basketball league that
mimics the head-to-head competition found in most fantasy
football leagues. Basketball leagues based on season-long
stats seem less interesting than beating your
friend/neighbor/relative/league-mate directly each week.
- The NIBL's commissioners this year are Bill Krieger
(630-527-1741) and John Raimondo (630-527-9415). Call
them with any problems or questions.
- The NIBL has 16 teams. Teams are divided into 2
conferences, east and west.
- The entry fee is $50.
How it works
- You draft 10 NBA players to be on your team.
- Each team must draft 2 centers, 4 forwards, and 4 guards.
- Each week you play a different fantasy opponent
head-to-head.
- You pick 5 players (1 center, 2 forwards, 2 guards) to
play each week.
- You must play each of your players at least once during
the regular season.
- The stats (points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks) of
those 5 players over a week of NBA games determine your
fantasy team's score. (See example below)
- Each team's score is divided by the number of games
played over the week so things are equal.
- The team with the highest score over the week wins. In
case of a tie, the home team wins.
The Season
- The regular season is 21 games played over 21 weeks of
NBA games.
- The top 2 teams in each conference play a conference
championship game during the 1st round of the NBA
playoffs.
- The 2 conference champions play for the league
championship during the 2nd round of the NBA playoffs.
Drafting Hints
- I really have no idea whether these are good hints or
not.
- Centers are scarce, get a starting center early in the
draft.
- If you make the playoffs, you can only use players that
make the NBA playoffs as well. So for a great player on a
bad team, the tradeoff is he may really help you make the
playoffs, but then he disappears. But, if you draft
mediocre players on playoff teams, you may never even
make it to the fantasy playoffs.
- Negative stats are not used in our league, so players
with lots of turnovers or missed shots are not penalized.
This makes guys like Iverson, Webber, Mourning, etc.
better fantasy players than they probably should be.
- Use the ranking based on last year's stats as a starting
point. 160 players are going to be drafted in our league
and most of them are on my list.
- Don't forget injuries; don't forget rookies.

Here's how to interpret the boxscore above:
- The Player and Game selections are made by
each team owner prior to the week's game.
- Each player's Fantasy-Score is the sum of the
player's Points, Reb's, Ast's, Stl's and Blk's
made by the player during each game. For example, in
Michael Jordan's first game against Boston, his
fantasy-score is 43 = (30 points + 6 rebounds + 4 assists
+ 2 steals + 1 block).
- Each team's fantasy-score is simply the sum of the
fantasy-scores of all 10 games played.
- The final score is then the fantasy-score divided by two
because the stats are accumulated over 2 games.
- Downers Grove Dogs beat the St. Charles Choo-Choos
150-140.
